Again in 1987, Illinois ranked first in acres of full season soybeans planted, and second, behind Iowa, in acres of full season corn planted. Illinois farmers used some form of conservation tillage system to plant nearly 45 percent of all full season corn in 1987. Eckcs predicts a continuing increase in the percentage of cropland planted with a conservation tillage system. Con-scrvaton tillage generally is considered to be one of the most effective and economical methods of reducing soil erosion.

Eckcs, State Conservationist for the USDA Soil Conservation Service, announced that "Illinois leads all states again this year in acres planted with a no-till system." This and other finding were the. results of a nationwide conservation tillage survey conducted by the Conservation Technology Information Center in West Lafayette, Indiana.

Illinois farmers again ranked first in cropland acres planted, although they planted 2.1 million fewer acres than they did in 1986. Eckes says the decrease in total acres planted can be attributed to cropland taken out of production in favor of the Conservation Reserve Program and the federal set-aside program. In other findings, the survey shows that Illinois ranked second behind Iowa in cropland planted utilizing a conservation tillage system. Conservation tillage is any planting system that keeps at least 30 percent of the soil surface covered with crop residue after planting. The residue intercepts the impact of raindrops, promotes absorption of water, and helps hold soil in place.

Illinois also ranked second behind Iowa in cropland planted utilizing a mulch-till system. Mulch-till is one of the conservation tillage systems. In this system, primary tillage is usually done with a chisel plow or a disk.
